History
The Marivon kennel name of Mark & Yvonne Davis was originally born back in 1988 but was allowed to lapse in the 1990's when our two children Thomas & Lucy took priority.
In the early days the main focus was showing and breeding whippets which we did with success in a very competitive and numerically strong breed winning Reserve CCs with two different dogs.
Yvonne always showed the whippets and not to be outdone an alternative breed was sought for Mark to get in on the act
This culminated in a visit to Crufts by Yvonne when she came back with the idea that a Deerhound would be a suitable companion for our Whip’s.
Having always owned running dogs Mark readily agreed to the idea and we were fortunate enough to be introduced to Kay Barrett who after a thorough interrogation agreed to let us have our first Deerhound back in 1985.
Our first Deerhound was Stranwith Dahlia (Stranwith Novra X Shenval Druid) and she was the catalyst for our love of this noble breed. Mark showed her up until she was two but if we were honest she never enjoyed the show ring.
To keep the show interest going, Kay was kind enough to let us have another Deerhound - Stranwith Juniper (Ch.Kilbourne Jade at Stranwith X Ch.Stranwith Reason) and she became the first Deerhound to take on our newly acquired kennel name Marivon. Juni was shown with limited success but the arrival of our children in the early 1990’s then took over.
Despite the children there was always 2/3 running dogs around the house and our next Deerhound was acquired as a pet from Sandy Platt at Charbonnel, Ester turned out to be a “Woolly” but she helped continue our love for the breed despite the many challenges she presented with her coat.
As the Children grew into adults we replaced them with another Deerhound. For the previous 12/18 months we had been regular visitors to the Kilbourne kennel where Mick & Glenis kindly gave us access to their own show dogs and puppies and allowed us to tap into their considerable knowledge and insight to the breed.
This resulted in Glenis allowing us to take on Kilbourne Annie McTavish (Ch.Kilbourne Firechief X Kilbourne Macdeva with Bluefawn) on breeding terms.
Watching the success of the Kilbourne kennel in the show ring, again lit the fire for us to want to get back into the show scene and when Macca was mated to Ch.Kilbourne Hector at Oelmuhle in the summer of 2011, Mick and Glenis kindly allowed us to have the pick of the bitches from the litter.
So our first show girl for over 20 years Kilbourne Nimble at Marivon arrived and we once again had the buzz and anticipation of the next show. She could not have got off to a better start at 6 months old we took her to the Hound Association of Scotland where she won her Puppy class and then Best Puppy in Breed, more success was to follow a week later where she won Best Puppy In Show at the Deerhound Club Breed Show held in Blackpool.
Nimble has continued to be consistently placed at both The Breed Show and at Championship Show level, along with her little brother Nico (owned and shown by Mick and Glenis) who has won two Challenge Certificates.
In February 2009, Macca had her second litter, this one to be under our own kennel name "Marivon", sired by CH. Greyflax Taylor Made for Kilbourne. This was not quite as straightforward as her first litter and the first three months certainly brought home how difficult and stressful Deerhound breeding can be at times. From this litter we identified 2 Bitches who we thought had potential to compete in the show ring and finally settled on keeping Marivon Florence (we call her "Sunny" as she was my sunshine during the difficult early stages) who we have campaigned lightly to date but placed at 2016 Crufts in PGB and won the Undergraduate class at the 2016 Breed Show.
The one we didn't keep, "Marivon Fallon", went to live in Mid Wales with Janine Wilbraham and has also been successful, notably winning the Junior Class at the 2015 Hound Show and the Post Grad Bitch and Challenge Certificate at the National Dog Show in 2016.
This being the first CC for both the Owner and us at Marivon of which we are justly proud.
We hope to continue to show and breed selectively over the coming years and would like to record grateful thanks to Kay Barrett and Mick & Glenis Peach for their encouragement and wise council over the years.
